It probably comes as no surprise that I adore Mary Tyler Moore. She's spunky, classy and a visionary. Little did I know her style is coming back full circle.
After a long day in the heat the kids and I looked for a little show on WTTW- Channel 11 as we relaxed. When that channel didn't quite come in (we don't have cable) we kept increasing the numbers as if anything else would be out there in the land of fuzz and white noise. Lo and behold The Mary Tyler Moore Show was on some obscure channel. (For the first time I praised those unsightly rabbit ears that lay next to the flat screen TV) "You're gonna make it after all..." I swayed as I sang remembering all the times I sat glued to the tube as a kid. I love Mary Richards- so chic, so coiffed. My daughter stayed with me (despite my singing) commenting on how pretty she is. I agreed.
The plot was genius. Georgette needed some serious guidance and Mary was teaching her to stand up for herself. (Love you Mary!) While she prepared some coffee in her cute kitchenette she lifted a Chemex and poured each cup. A Chemex? Like my Chemex?
I shouted for Andy... "Mary Tyler Moore has a Chemex!" He rushed as if I said she had a Ferrari and cheered when he saw it. We had no idea that it had been around for so long. Somehow I thought it was another ingenious eco-friendly contraption from Intelligentsia that we've grown to rely on.
When I sat back I thought about it, our lifestyle is constantly looking ahead- how can we do things more efficiently, more responsibly. But we also have to pay homage to the way some things were done in the past and go back to a simpler way. Like when we made coffee in a simple glass carafe with a stylish wood handle.
