When Manda said that De Fietsfabriek was sponsoring us for Bike the Drive I couldn't wait to test the bakfiets. It's a no brainer in my book. Fits 4 kids and your groceries too. Simple design that keeps your pant leg from getting caught (or dirty from rain and mud). Sturdy dual locking systems to boggle even the most experienced criminal. The piece of mind that your kids aren't beating each other silly while they are cramped in some hot bike trailer behind you. Not to mention the tiny trailer being invisible to a speedy cab rushing around a corner as you turn. And such stylish design... you get comments wherever you go!
The biggest surprise is that it is actually really easy to ride. If you don't know me in person, I slouch like crazy and have been working on correcting this for about the past 30 years (give or take a few ;) so handle bar and seat positioning is critical for me. The bakfiets is like sitting upright, but naturally so. Very comfortable even when going for long distances.
The second thing that makes me cringe when considering of a long bike ride is the seat. (Ladies, you know what I am talking about. Yow!) I am pleased to announce that I have driven this baby all over the city and Bike the Drive and the seat never bothered me once. What a relief!
Actually this bike lives up to their slogan www.DefeatsTheCar.com. Each time I ride it I realize how much nicer I am when I do not take the car. Since I a releasing all my pent up energy with physical exercise, I am more patient with the kids. I smile more. I breathe better. I look better (even starting to lose those last Skinny Bitch pounds I packed on and get some sexy thighs! How often can you say that? ;) Every time I ride I enjoy moving about this gorgeous city in a way I can never connect with sitting in a car stuck in traffic. And the people stuck in traffic that see me yell "I wish I were you!"... then be me. Take your bike for a spin and look at life differently.

With another baby coming, I have been thinking about how I am going to take both children on my bike. My daughter just rides on a seat in the back now. I thought about a trailer, but not see them behind me..makes me nervous. This is a cool option. That's for the tip - I'll look into it!
I don't have kids, but I'm picturing all the stuff I could haul around town with those bikes! That's awesome! And I bet the kids love it too--like a wagon but faster!
